This is a collection of recordings that began in 1991 in Dallas. Life forced me to put the project on hold and I spent the next 7 years in Florida. Upon my return to Dallas in 1998, I returned to the studio and finished the project with a new perspective.
The title track Wichita Falls is a satyrical commentary on the fall of society in America. I borrowed heavily from Fredrich Nietzshce's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and Ernest Hemingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls.
New Orleans In The Rain was included on a Texas Songwriter Compilation CD, Moments Of Grace alongside such greats as Sarah Hickman and Billy Joe Shaver.
My favorite CD project so far. Wouldn't You? is the closest I've ever gotten to recording a song the way I heard it in my head when I wrote it. Messiah is a story-song about the absurdity of religion and the murder, rape and greed it represents. One of my most provocative.
Timberline was fun to write and a blast to record. After releasing this CD, I performed Timberline live.
At the end, the audience began to bark like dogs- just the way I have real dogs barking on the recording. It was so cool.
Essential of course means this is a Best Of collection. The songs included here are what I consider my best work from my other 2 CDs.
Magic Theater, a crowd favorite, is taken from a novel Steppenwolf, written by Herman Hesse. Marvelous!
Cripple In The Crowd is one of my oldest songs and as close to a description of me as you'll find. I'm extremely proud of this dark walk down the midway.
El Castillo is an instrumental named for an ancient pyramid at the Mayan Ruins in Chichin Itza, Mexico. As a younger man I climbed that pyramid.
